System Services via Wind and Solar Parks in India

What technical possibilities do wind and solar park have in the regulation of active and reactive power by the grid operator? This question was pursued by energy & meteo systems in 2019 on behalf of the GIZ project Indo-German Energy Programme – Green Energy Corridors (IGEN-GEC). The reason for the study is the new, dynamic construction of renewable energies. By the year 2022 the installed power is to reach 175 GW.

As consultants, energy & meteo systems analyzed the existing control mechanisms of plant operators in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telenagana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and suggested possible technical upgrades for the provision of system services.

Moreover, international best practice examples for system services from renewable energies were introduced and contributions were made towards the development of conditions for Indian grid connections and the Indian electricity market.

The project was concluded with a workshop in Bangalore in November 2019 where the project results were presented and discussed. Participants included the South Regional Power Committee, the South Indian State Electricity Control Centers along with other players from the energy sector.
