The Founders and Managing Directors

Wind Powered Entrepreneurial Spirit

Dr. Ulrich Focken (pictured left), Managing Director and co-founder of energy & meteo systems, emsys VPP and emsys grid services, studied Physics at the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg. The topic of his dissertation, the development of the wind power prediction system, Previento, and its later implementation into operational service, laid the foundation stone for the founding of the company in 2004. Previous to that, he worked at ForWind, the Oldenburg centre for wind energy research, as a project leader for grid integration and wind power predictions and also as an expert consultant for international wind farm projects.

Today, Dr. Ulrich Focken is responsible for the operational business of the three companies and is a driving force behind the development of new products in the area of renewable energy integration. Moreover, he is involved as an initiator and leader in various national and international research and development projects.

Dr. Matthias Lange
(pictured right), Managing Director and co-founder of energy & meteo systems, emsys VPP and emsys grid services, was significantly involved in the development of the wind power prediction system, Previento, and its transfer into operational service. To this day, he leads the implementation of numerous customer projects of the Oldenburg energy management and prediction specialist and coordinates national and international research and development projects.

Dr. Matthias Lange studied physics in Oldenburg, Warwick (UK) and Marburg. He attained his doctorate in 2003 from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg on the topic of the uncertainty of wind power predictions. Before co-founding energy & meteo systems in 2004, he was project leader for network integration and wind energy predictions at ForWind, the centre for wind energy research in Oldenburg. In addition, he performed expert site appraisals for wind turbine locations.

Jan Rosenkranz
(not in the picture), Managing Director of emsys grid services, worked at energy & meteo systems for many years and made a significant contribution to the further development of the company. After completing his physics degree at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in 2010, he began his career at energy & meteo systems, where he had already been working as a student since 2007. His pioneering achievements include the development of the Suncast solar power forecast in 2010, followed by the vertical grid load forecast in 2017.

From 2014 to 2019, Jan Rosenkranz took over the position of team leader of the research department at energy & meteo systems and drove the development of innovative technologies. As project manager for up to 60 employees involved, he has been responsible for the implementation of Redispatch 2.0 since 2019. In 2021, he moved to emsys grid services, where he has been a member of the management board since December 2023. He is also an authorized representative at energy & meteo systems and emsys VPP.

Our Driving Force: Consistently Ecological

Ecological thinking has been with us from an early stage. Whether it was the first own wind turbine, demonstrating in front of nuclear power plants or the conviction that there is a solution for everything – even at a young age, all three managing directors were driven by the desire to change the energy industry and make it more in-line with the environment.

Even today, our entire portfolio is consistently geared towards the integration of renewable energies. In the process, we see our customers less as contracting entities and more as partners with which we can cooperate to arrive at an energy industry in accordance with nature. Since the beginning, we have persistently proceeded towards the goal of providing energy which is 100% from renewable energy sources!
